3 Veteran Packers Who Should Be Cut Entering Training Camp
By Sean Facey
The Green Bay Packers shocked the NFL by cutting Pro Bowl defensive lineman Mike Daniels early in the week, but he may not be the last stalwart of the team to get the axe this summer. There are a handful of veteran players who have become expendable that the Packers should cut from the team as the season gets underway, starting with these three.
3. Tramon Williams
36-year-old defensive back Tramon Williams was a stalwart of the Packer defense for his first eight years in the league. After a few years away from Green Bay, he signed back with the team, once again establishing himself as a starter in the secondary. Young stars like Jaire Alexender have proved to be more than capable in taking on a large defensive burden however, and in a league predicated on speed and youth, it's time for the Packers to move on from Tramon.
2. Mason Crosby
Solid kickers are hard to come by in the NFL, but Mason Crosby just doesn't have it anymore. He's converted just 80.4% of his 56 field goal attempts since the start of the 2017 season. He ranks as one of the least accurate kickers in football, and turns 35 in September. Yes, releasing him would be perceived by many as a daring move. No, Sam Ficken, claimed off waivers in April, is untested. But this might be something the Packers have to consider if they want to turn the page and optimize their kicking game.
1. Marcedes Lewis
Marcedes Lewis is the oldest player on offense for the Packers this year not named Aaron Rodgers. At the age of 35, he's definitely lost a step or two, and with Jimmy Graham set to get the bulk of the targets at tight end this year, it's hard to imagine any type of use in keeping the former Jaguar around. The team has some youth to call upon at the tight end position. The gigantic veteran's roster spot would be better used on some younger guys eager for a chance to prove themselves.
