3 Veteran Steelers Who Should Be Cut Entering Training Camp
By James.r
The Pittsburgh Steelers saw a lot of roster turnover this offseason. Now, they have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL, and it will be interesting to see how they handle that ahead of the season. With their youth in mind, here are three veterans who could become roster casualties during training camp.
1. CB Artie Burns
Burns is a talented cornerback whose time could be up in Pittsburgh. The Steelers already have Joe Haden locked in on one side, and they added talent this offseason by signing Steven Nelson and drafting Justin Layne in the third round. Burns is due an $800,000 roster bonus on the third day of camp. Burns hasn't lived up to his expectations as a former first-round pick, only starting six games last year, so the Steelers may be wise to part ways with the 24-year-old.
2. LB Anthony Chickillo
Chickillo has spent four seasons with the Steelers since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He's got a good chance to make the roster, but the addition of Mark Barron as well as that of Devin Bush leave him on shakier ground than he may have anticipated. If a player like sixth-round pick Sutton Smith makes an impressive training camp push, Chickillo could become the odd man out in the linebacking group.
3. DT Daniel McCullers
McCullers is currently on the roster as a situational run defender, but if a young player pushes him for his spot, he could be out of town. Sixth-round pick Isaiah Buggs will be gunning for a roster spot, and defensive tackle Lavon Hooks will be making noise in camp as well. With the 27-year-old McCullers firmly the fifth man on the defensive line, he could be in trouble if he doesn't perform well during the preseason.
