3 Ways the Chiefs Can Totally Blow Super Bowl LIV
By Jerry Trotta
Both the Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid will look to overcome their Super Bowl woes when they take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday evening in Miami.
The former, of course, are appearing in their first SB in 50 years, and haven't hoisted the Lombardi Trophy since 1970, whereas a Super Bowl ring as a head man is the only thing that is separating the latter from becoming an all-time great HC.
If Reid isn't careful, however, his Chiefs could hand the 49ers a victory. With that in mind, here's a few ways that Kansas City could totally fumble Sunday's game.
3. Entirely Abandoning the Run Game
As previously stated, it's not farfetched to think that Reid's infatuation with the Chiefs' passing attack could be prove to be his downfall. In our eyes, tailback Damien Williams is an underlying X-factor in this one. If he's able to establish a rhythm, it will only clear things up for Patrick Mahomes through the air. Further, Reid's game and clock management are heavily-scorned throughout the NFL landscape. Opting to throw in obvious running situations will prove to be an unforgivable, potentially legacy-altering mistake from Reid.
2. Failing to Protect Mahomes
The Arrowhead faithful have every reason to be wary of their head coach's sheer adoration for the passing game. Rarely have we seen the Chiefs during Reid's reign stack the box in an effort to maximize Mahomes' time in the pocket. As we know, the 49ers are able to bullrush opposing QBs with just a four-man rush. If that holds true on Sunday, KC will struggle, even though Mahomes is a magician when it comes to eluding pressure.
1. Enduring Another Slow Start
Kansas City were staring down the barrel of a 24-0 deficit against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round before they could even blink. A blown coverage led to a long Deshaun Watson touchdown pass, a blocked punt was returned for a touchdown, and a muffed punt in the red zone led to another Houston score. Don't forget their 10-0 deficit to Tennessee in the AFC title game, too. Both at home! A similar sluggish start against San Francisco and their demoralizing run game would absolutely spell doom for the Chiefs. The 49ers are built to sustain leads. Gift wrap them an early one and it's game over.
