3 Wide Receivers the Eagles Can Sign After DeSean Jackson's Injury
By Jerry Trotta
The Philadelphia Eagles paid the price for bringing DeSean Jackson back too soon from injury for Sunday's tilt against the Chicago Bears. It was disclosed on Monday that the three-time Pro Bowler could miss the remainder of the season as he's expected to undergo surgery to repair a core muscle injury.
Doug Pederson was simply desperate to add another weapon, let alone a deep threat, for Carson Wentz and the Eagles bleak passing game, but that dream won't come to fruition.
Alshon Jeffery and Zach Ertz simply need another WR lined up out wide to help draw some of the attention off them, and here are three free agents that Philly can sign to help the cause.
3. Kelvin Benjamin
It's really okay if a plethora of Philly fanatics just regurgitated their dinners after seeing Benjamin's name on the list. The Florida State bust last played for the Chiefs in 2018, and no team took a chance on him in the offseason. The Giants brought him in for a few workouts, but that marriage didn't last long at all. Let's remember that the Eagles are desperate for some kind of help as JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Mack Hollins haven't contributed much of anything and Nelson Agholor has reverted back to dropping passes. In terms of raw talent, Benjamin is one of the top three names in the current WR market.
2. Antonio Brown
Desperate times call for desperate measures, no? Antonio Brown is keen on making an NFL return, despite his previous claims that he was done with the league, and his name was connected to the Seahawks as recently as this week. Russell Wilson was reportedly pushing for Seattle to sign the embattled wideout, which means that other teams might consider not waiting for his allegations to settle before taking a chance on him. Mr. Big Chest has his demons, but the Eagles are in dire need of a difference maker lined up out wide. Brown fits that billing.
1. Michael Crabtree
We're not crazy about the idea either, but it's slim pickings on the current WR market. The Cardinals parted ways with Crabtree after signing him late in the offseason. At 32 years old he's far past his prime but is just two seasons removed from hauling in 58 receptions for eight touchdowns with Baltimore. The Eagles should pull the trigger and welcome Crabtree to the City of Brotherly Love before another team suffers an injury and scoops him up.
