3 Worst Coaching Hires Panthers Could Possibly Make

The Carolina Panthers are in a tough position. Several assistants have gone to join Ron Rivera in Washington and Cam Newton's health remains in question for 2020. A state of transition means the Panthers need someone with patience and experience to make the team a contender again.

While many are being considered for the job, here are three candidates the Panthers should avoid.

3. Perry Fewell

Fewell went 0-4 as the interim coach of the Panthers in 2019. He was also an interim coach in Buffalo back in 2009, but has never had the job in a full-time capacity. He has spent his career as a defensive coach and should only be considered for such a position at this point. A career position coach would not inspire much confidence for a team that faltered under his leadership.

2. Josh McDaniels

McDaniels has been great in New England, but he was a flop in Denver as a head coach and most recently bailed on Indianapolis after agreeing to take the job. He seems more of like a guy who needs a contending roster to have his message heard. At this point in his career it's not entirely plausible he's the right fit for a job with a lot of holes on the roster.

1. Matt Rhule

Rhule is a top candidate this offseason, yet he only has one year of NFL experience, and it came as an assistant offensive line coach with the Giants. On top of that, he's only had four winning seasons as a college head coach. He has turned around both Temple and Baylor, but a 47-43 overall record makes it tough to justify a move to the NFL, especially with a team that needs a ton of work.
