4 Best Thanksgiving Day Performances in Dallas Cowboys History
By Andy Loughmiller
We are oh-so-close to stuffing our faces and watching football with family and friends. The Dallas Cowboys are one of the two teams that always play on Turkey Day, and they've given us a number of memorable individual performances on this feast-driven Thursday since the holiday game officially became a Dallas tradition back in 1978. Here are the four best Thanksgiving day performances in Cowboys history.
4. Michael Irvin vs the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1991
Irvin is undoubtedly the best Cowboys receiver in franchise history. The Playmaker had the best Thanksgiving day game of his career against the Steelers, accounting for 157 receiving yards and a touchdown on eight catches. Dallas would go on to defeat Pittsburgh in a low-scoring 20-10 game.
3. Jason Garrett vs the Green Bay Packers in 1994
Some people think that Garrett will be coaching for his job on Thursday, but he does have a history of performing well on Thanksgiving. Back in 1994 when the now head coach of the Cowboys was Dallas' backup quarterback, he was thrust into action, and he didn't disappoint. Garret threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns and led America's Team to a victory over Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.
2. Emmitt Smith vs the Washington Redskins in 1996
One of the greatest running backs in NFL history had a day to remember against the rival Washington Redskins in 1996. He carried the ball 29 times for 155 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Smith eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark six times on Thanksgiving, but this performance was the best of the bunch.
1. Tony Romo vs the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006
Tony Romo always seemed to play well on Thanksgiving. However, his first outing was his best. He threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns in a lopsided win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This was only the fifth time Romo had started a game under center, but it would help jump start his 14-year career in the league.
