4 Best Transfer Fits for USC QB JT Daniels
By Michael Luciano
USC quarterback JT Daniels, a former 5-star recruit who lost his job as the starting quarterback after he tore his ACL in Week 1 of 2019, gave Clay Helton and the Trojans a major punch in the gut this week when he announced that he intended to put his name in the transfer portal, as he looks for another blue blood program to continue his college football career with. Based on how his recruiting went before he decided to commit to USC, these four teams should be hot on Daniels' trail.
4. Michigan
Now that the Shea Patterson era has mercifully come to a close, the likes of Dylan McCaffrey, Joe Milton, and Cade McNamara will all be competing for the starting gig at Michigan. The Wolverines were extremely interested in Daniels before he chose to stay close to home, and they could be interested in him once again after his up-and-down stint as the starting QB for the Trojans. They landed Patterson in a transfer, so why not try again with Daniels?
3. Oregon
Mario Cristobal and Oregon might be coming off a Rose Bowl win, but the Ducks have a new OC in Joe Moorhead, after Marcus Arroyo took the UNLV head coaching job, and are in need of a quarterback after Justin Herbert left for the NFL. Daniels was decently interested in Oregon before ultimately choosing USC, and he could swap one Pac-12 power for another. His mobility and accuracy could help him thrive in Moorhead's offense.
2. Stanford
USC was always the frontrunner for Daniels, but Stanford was lurking in the weeds for a long time during his recruitment. While former 5-star Davis Mills is expected to be the starter for the Cardinal, his uninspiring performance in relief of KJ Costello last year leaves the door open for a player with Daniels' natural accuracy to come in and take the starting job away. Mills vs Daniels would easily be the best quarterback competition of the offseason.
1. LSU
Two years ago, an LSU program known for nailing it at pretty much every position except quarterback took a chance on a stringy kid from Ohio State named Joe Burrow. Two years later, Burrow authored the greatest season in college football history, and LSU got a natty out of the whole ordeal. Myles Brennan is the favorite to succeed Burrow under new passing game coordinator Scott Linehan, but Ed Orgeron could and should start seeing if Daniels, who looked at LSU as a high schooler, would be willing to swap Los Angeles for Baton Rouge.
