4 Destinations for Anthony Rendon in Free Agency
By Scott Rogust
While the Washington Nationals are still celebrating their World Series victory, they have a busy offseason ahead of them. There's the possibility that not only World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg opts-out, but star slugger Anthony Rendon signs elsewhere.
There are plenty of teams that need a guy who can both bat and defend at the hot corner of the infield. Anthony Rendon fits the bill.
Here are four destinations for Anthony Rendon in free agency.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers have the richest bank account in Major League Baseball. After getting upset by the Nationals in the NLDS, LA has already been linked to Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor, so you can't rule out the likes of Rendon to don the Dodger blue and white. Rendon serves as an immediate upgrade over Justin Turner, and with the Dodgers ready for a World Series title, they may just pursue the 29-year-old in free agency.
3. Texas Rangers
Home is where the heart is. Rendon is a Houston-native, and while the Astros already have a stud third baseman in Alex Bregman, the Texas Rangers are a team in need of star power. And what's more, the Rangers open up their new ballpark next season. Rendon could come into town as the face of the team and help the Rangers get back into the postseason. Considering the team has been plagued at the third base position this past season, expect the Rangers to make a strong push for Rendon.
2. Los Angeles Angels
Let's face it, the Los Angeles Angels are going to be an active team in the offseason. With a new manager in Joe Maddon on board, the Angels are officially a win-now team. Like the Rangers, the Angels have been cursed at third base. In fact, Angels third basemen are ranked last in OPS this past season. If the Angels don't want to waste the prime of Mike Trout, go get him Anthony Rendon (and an ace pitcher, too).
1. Washington Nationals
You can't count the Washington Nationals out of the Anthony Rendon sweepstakes. If Stephen Strasburg is to move on from the Nationals, that provides the team that much more financial fire power to re-sign Rendon to a potentially massive contract. It could very well exceed what fellow third baseman Nolan Arenado got earlier this year. You best believe the Nationals will do whatever it takes to keep Rendon in DC.
