4 Destinations for Stephen Strasburg in Free Agency
By Scott Rogust
The World Series has come and gone, as the Washington Nationals defeated the Houston Astros in seven games on Wednesday. Now that baseball is done, MLB now moves onto "Hot Stove" season.
One of the larger question marks that will surround the Nationals in the next couple of days is whether World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg will opt out of his contract, which has four years and $100 million remaining. If he is to hit the open market, there are plenty of teams that will hand over a blank check in order to secure his services.
Here are four possible destinations for Stephen Strasburgh if he is to leave Washington.
4. Chicago White Sox
If Stephen Strasburg seriously wants to cash in on a lucrative deal, the Chicago White Sox are the team for him. The Southside Chicago team were notoriously spurned by Manny Machado and Bryce Harper last winter. You'd think they'd pass up on the chance to get a World Series MVP? With only $15 million in payroll commitments for next season, the White Sox could very well back up the Brinks truck into Strasburg's driveway.
3. Los Angeles Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have long neglected their starting pitching rotation, in favor of signing sluggers. The mistakes have resulted in five consecutive non-playoff appearances. With a new manager in Joe Maddon hired to bring them back to the top of baseball, they need to get a starting pitcher. Strasburg could be intrigued by joining a coaching staff that includes Maddon and Mickey Callaway. Oh, and being handed a lucrative contract would help as well.
2. New York Yankees
The New York Yankees were burned last winter for passing up on signing Patrick Corbin. With that mistake resulting in another postseason exit, the Yankees are going to be hellbent on signing a certified ace. They're already focused on chasing Gerrit Cole, but if that proves to be unsuccessful, expect the Yankees to shift their focus to Strasburg.
1. San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres have longed for an ace these past couple of seasons, most notably Noah Syndergaard of the New York Mets. The Padres may have the best shot of signing Strasburg. Why? He was born and raised in San Diego and played at San Diego State University. With money to spend, the Padres are among the favorites to land the services of the World Series MVP.
