4 Free Agents the 49ers Need to Target This Offseason
By Scott Rogust

The San Francisco 49ers were one quarter away from hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LIV. Instead, the team suffered an unfortunate collapse and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Even with the loss, the 2019 season was an absolute success for the 49ers. Following an impressive roster build, San Francisco still has $13 million in cap space to spend in free agency to put them over the top.
Here are four players on the open market the 49ers should absolutely try to sign.
4. DT Javon Hargrave
The 49ers defensive line earned their reputation of being the scariest in the entire NFL. When looking at one of their weaknesses, it's easy to pinpoint Sheldon Day, who didn't put up sexy numbers on the stat sheet. An obvious upgrade would be Javon Hargrave of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Compared to Day's 15 tackles, Hargrave has 60, along with four sacks and one forced fumble. Plus, Hargrave presents larger upside than Day.
3. OG Joe Thuney
The 49ers offensive line is pretty much stout with Joe Staley, Mike McGlinchey, and Weston Richburg. The interior offensive line, though, leaves plenty to be desired. Considering their championship window will be propped open next season, the 49ers need to push for an offensive guard who knows a thing or two about winning the big one. Joe Thuney is that guy, and he can find just as much success in San Francisco as he's had with the New England Patriots.
2. WR Amari Cooper
While not as explosive as their defense, the 49ers offense was still electric. The addition of Emmanuel Sanders helped in that effort, but now, he's set to become a free agent. While bringing Sanders back would be a wise move, there's an even better option on the open market, and that's Amari Cooper. Even though he was limited by injuries, Cooper accumulated 1,187 yards and eight touchdowns on 79 catches. If the 49ers want to return to the Super Bowl next year, they need to sign Cooper. But they have one more option.
1. WR AJ Green
A.J. Green missed the entire 2019 season with the Cincinnati Bengals. Given the Bengals are in a rebuild, Green could ultimately choose a team that can compete for a Super Bowl. The 49ers present themselves as his best chance. Considering San Francisco has a quality rushing attack, that could open things up for Green on the outside. The 49ers have longed for a superstar receiver, and Green can be that guy...on the cheap.
