4 Free Agents the Bills Need to Target This Offseason
By Scott Rogust
The future of the Buffalo Bills looks bright. The team finished a close second to the New England Patriots in the AFC East standings, while clinching their second playoff berth in three years.
Despite their early exit, the Bills have the chance to make some noise in 2020. That all starts in free agency. Even after making tons of noise on the open market last offseason, Buffalo has a staggering $80 million in cap space to entice players to sign on for next season.
Given that, here are four free agents the Bills should pursue.
4. RB Melvin Gordon
Yeah, we know, spending money on a running back isn't the go-to strategy in the NFL anymore. But the Bills are the exception. Buffalo struck gold with Devin Singletary in the NFL Draft last year, but with Frank Gore becoming a free agent, there's a need at running back. Enter Melvin Gordon. Yes, Gordon's holdout burned him, but he lit it up towards the end of the year, opening things up in the receiving game. The Bills need explosive players on their offense if they want to compete for the AFC East crown next year. Adding Gordon helps with that goal.
3. EDGE Jadeveon Clowney
With Lorenzo Alexander's retirement and Shaq Lawson hitting free agency, Buffalo's need for an edge rusher is massive. Jadeveon Clowney is a name that certainly sticks out. Clowney has yet to post a double-digit sacks season in his career, but he's shown a propensity for putting pressure on the quarterback. Clowney has expressed his interest in signing with a contender, like the Seattle Seahawks. Luckily for him, the Bills are contenders and have a bunch of cash to spend. It's a win-win for both Clowney and Buffalo.
2. DE Yannick Ngakoue
If Clowney's price tag is too steep, there's a better option on the market in the form of Yannick Ngakoue. Ever since being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ngakoue has solidified his spot as one of the best young pass rushers in the league. This past season, Ngakoue recorded 41 tackles, eight sacks, four forced fumbles, and one interception. The Bills should spam his phone and offer him a blank check to secure his services for 2020 and beyond.
1. WR Amari Cooper
Last offseason, the Bills signed receivers John Brown and Cole Beasley as weapons for quarterback Josh Allen. While both performed admirably in Buffalo's 2019 campaign, the offense was still missing that top receiver. Look no further than Amari Cooper. Look past the start of his career with the Oakland Raiders, and focus on his years with the Dallas Cowboys. Once joining the 'Boys, Cooper etched his name as one of the top receivers in the game, as evidenced by his 1,189 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. While Cooper has expressed his interest in returning to the Cowboys, the Bills can easily change his mind by backing a Brinks truck up his driveway.
