By Brendan Balsamo
2016 was an amazing year in baseball. Not only were fans given an incredibly fun season to watch, but Chicago Cubs managed to snap their painstaking 108-year World Series drought.
The Curse of the Billy Goat was lifted in 2016, and you can try and relive the historic season in your coronavirus quarantine while baseball is on the shelf by watching these four incredible moments from the Cubs' World Series season.
4. Jake Arrieta's No-Hitter vs the Reds
Jake Arrieta's second no-hitter in as many seasons was one to remember. Not only was it a Cubs rout in a 16-0 victory over their division rival the Cincinnati Reds, but it was an incredible performance by Arrieta who walked four and struck out six in his complete game effort. This April 21 game was the first sign that 2016 was going to be a special year for the Cubs.
3. NLDS Game 4 Comeback vs the Giants
The San Francisco Giants were about to send the NLDS to a Game 5 in Chicago if they could just hold on to a three-run lead in the top of the ninth inning. The Cubs had other ideas. Ben Zobrist made it a two-run game with an RBI double, and pinch-hitter Willson Contreras tied the game with a two-run single. Later in the inning, Javier Baez hit an RBI single that gave the Cubs a lead they wouldn't relinquish and they went on to their second straight NLCS.
2. NLCS Game 6 Cubs Win the Pennant vs the Dodgers
Joe Buck screamed "The Cubs have won the pennant!" and you could hardly hear him. That's how loud Wrigley Field got when the Cubs turned two to finish off the Los Angeles Dodgers and reach their first World Series since 1945. The weight of the world was lifted off the franchise's shoulders on Oct. 23 in a 5-0 win that Cubs fans will never forget.
1. WS Game 7 Cubs Reverse the Curse vs the Indians
In one of the best Game 7's ever played, the Cubs finally broke the Curse of the Billy Goat by beating the Cleveland Indians in an extra-inning, rain-delayed thriller of a game. Cubs fans went through a roller coaster of emotions throughout the five-hour marathon. This game had it all; David Ross' home run that looked to seal the deal by making it 5-1 Cubs, one of the most clutch homers of all-time, hit courtesy of Rajai Davis, and of course, a 10th-inning go-ahead RBI double by eventual World Series MVP Ben Zobrist. In terms of most memorable and exciting Cubs games in franchise history, this World Series Game 7 is arguably at the top.
