4 Reasons the Blues Can't Let the City Of Boston Win Another Championship
By Michael Luciano
The St. Louis Blues have the hopes and dreams of not just the entire American Midwest, but the country as a whole, riding on their shoulder pads ahead of their Game 7 matchup against the Boston Bruins. If the Bruins take home the Stanley Cup, that means Boston, who hasn't been short of champions of late between the Red Sox and Patriots, will get another trophy to add to the case. Here are four reasons that Boston can't end up with their third title this year alone.
4. Another Boston Dynasty Could Form
If the Bruins take home their first title since the Tim Thomas days of 2011, the first in what could be several titles for this young core will come to fruition. While veterans like Tuukka Rask and Patrice Bergeron get a lot of the love, David Pastrnak, Jake Debrusk, and Charlie McAvoy, all of whom are 22 or under, have the Bruins positioned for runs at the Cup for the next decade.
3. The Choker Narrative Will Continue to Fit the Blues' Franchise
After the league expanded in 1967, St. Louis made three consecutive Cup Finals, but were swept in each of them. After that initial spurt, it took the Blues 49 years to get back to the championship. With depth, youth and talent up and down this roster, Craig Berube's team risks being slapped with the "Same Old Blues" tag that so many other disappointing teams have been assigned.
2. Original Six Arrogance Will Continue To Thrive
Even after all these years, the Original Six clubs (Bruins, Blackhawks, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers, Red Wings), still have a degree of snobbishness and elitism that permeates throughout their fanbase. It's not unlike a Yankees or Packers speaking of the Babe Ruth and Vince Lombardi days in 2019. A Blues win could make a small dent in that narrative, while a loss would only feed that fire.
1. The Fans
My God, the fans. We get it, your teams are really smart, you say "wicked" all the time, you love your Barstool, and every other fanbase is just jealous. The truth is, we are. You don't think New York or Los Angeles or Philadelphia would love three championships in one year? If the Bruins prevail in Game 7, expect some Dunkin Donuts-addled gloating and trash-talking, which somehow remains just as unbearable the 345th time you've heard it as it was the very first time.
