4 Running Backs That Will Smash Ezekiel Elliott's Record-Breaking Contract
By Michael Luciano
Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott finally got his thirst for a record-breaking contract quenched when he inked a six-year, $90 million deal with Dallas that surpassed Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley's mark. While Zeke should be commended for earning this big payday, these four guys should break Zeke's number when their time comes.
4. James Conner
The Steelers already lost one Pro Bowl running back to a contract dispute, and they're not going to lose two. After rushing for 973 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, Conner made his first of what should be several Pro Bowls. With Ben Roethlisberger getting a little long in the tooth, Mike Tomlin can and should rely more on the run game, which means that Conner will shine with more opportunities.
3. Christian McCaffrey
In his first year as the lead back in a Norv Turner offense in Carolina, McCaffrey recorded almost 2,000 total yards from scrimmage while setting the record for receptions by a halfback at 107. At just 23 years old and with Cam Newton next to him for the foreseeable future, McCaffrey will be in line to rack up the Pro Bowls as Ron Rivera and the Panthers look to force feed him the ball.
2. Alvin Kamara
Kamara has become a superstar in short order in New Orleans, piling up 3,146 yards from scrimmage and 31 touchdowns during his two seasons as a Saint. Given how Mark Ingram departed for the Baltimore Ravens, Kamara figures to shoulder even more of the workload this year, even with the addition of Latavius Murray. When it comes time to agree on a new contract, Kamara is going to ask for ludicrous amounts of money given his value as a receiver and runner.
1. Saquon Barkley
Dear Lord, when it come times for Saquon to re-up with the Giants, he's going to ask for the world, and then some. After accumulating 2,028 yards from scrimmage in his rookie year, the 2018 No. 2 overall pick was everything he looked like he would become at Penn State during his first year. Given his magnetic personality and transcendent play on the field, the Giants will have to break the bank to keep him.
