4 Teams That Should Trade With Mariners Amid Fire Sale
By Sean Facey
The trade deadline is less than two months away, and the Mariners are shooting for a full-on clearance. Afer gagging away an early hot streak to fall firmly into last place in the AL West, everyone is on the trading block for the rebuilding squad. With Jay Bruce the first name out the door to Philadelphia, here are four other teams that should hammer out a deal with Jerry Dipoto.
4. Colorado Rockies
The Rockies need rotation help (eternally) and they need it badly (duh). Owners of an NL-worst 5.54 ERA, a trade with Seattle for a starter like Mike Leake is their biggest chance of climbing back into the playoff race, especially now that they've vaulted back over .500.
3. Texas Rangers
The Rangers find themselves in Wild Card contention entering June, but they've been lacking in production from the third base side. Free agent signing Asdrubal Cabrera hasn't played as advertised, especially against lefties, batting just .191. A trade for Ryon Healy would give the Rangers the perfect platoon moving forward.
2. Cleveland Indians
Cleveland ranks dead last in value from the DH, posting a -0.9 fWAR and just a .313 slugging percentage. A reunion with Edwin Encarnacion, who has slugged .495 with 15 home runs on the season, would be the perfect deal to spark the offense to at least put up a fight against the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins.
1. Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers' one true weakness is undoubtedly the rotation, and the Mariners have plenty of starting talent to offer. With a respectable farm system, Milwaukee could easily swing a trade for a guy like Marco Gonzales or Leake to bolster the pitching staff for a deep October run.
