4 Under-the-Radar Trade Deadline Acquisitions That Are Performing Incredibly Well
By Parker White
The one thing we'll always remember about the 2019 MLB trade deadline is Zack Greinke getting traded to the Houston Astros, which could help them win their second World Series in three years. However, there are always some lesser-known players who are moved that end up doing wonders for their new teams.
So, in an effort to give these guys more attention, here are four under-the-radar trade deadline acquisitions you may not have noticed that are dominating.
4. RHP Daniel Hudson, Washington Nationals
Veteran right-hander Daniel Hudson was having a nice season with the Toronto Blue Jays out of their bullpen, but the trade that sent him to the Washington Nationals didn't get much attention. However, especially with Sean Doolittle out, Hudson could take over the ninth inning and help this Nats team make the postseason. He's already made 10 appearances out of Washington's much-maligned pen and has registered a 1.08 ERA with 10 strikeouts over 8.1 innings.
3. RHP Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona may have traded a future Hall of Famer and ace in Zack Greinke, but they may have replaced him with a much younger top-of-the-rotation starter in rookie right-hander Zac Gallen. Why Miami dealt him away is baffling, because in three starts with the D-backs the right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and has 17 strikeouts over 15 innings.
2. OF Travis Demeritte, Detroit Tigers
All-Star closer Shane Greene was the headliner in the deal that sent him to the Atlanta Braves, but the Detroit Tigers may have found themselves an outfielder who was in need of an opportunity. Travis Demeritte (along with heralded pitching prospect Joey Wentz) went to Detroit in this deal, and in 18 games he's slashing .292/.356/.492 with seven extra-base hits (two home runs) and five RBI. Demeritte has always shown power down in the minors, but consistency and strikeout issues kept him from rising and finding time in Atlanta. Now he's on a rebuilding club that's giving him every opportunity, and thus far, the 24-year-old is taking advantage of it.
1. RHP Nick Anderson, Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays may have stumbled across a future closer and one of the elite relievers in the sport, and he of course came from the Miami Marlins. Right-hander Nick Anderson was prospering in obscurity with the Marlins, and he's taken it to another level in another small market in Tampa Bay, where in eight appearances has yet to give up a run and has 18 strikeouts over eight innings.
