This 49ers-Giants Evan Engram Trade Would Make San Francisco Extra Scary
By Michael Luciano
The San Francisco 49ers don't have tons of draft picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, but Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch know they need to surround Jimmy Garoppolo with some extra weapons.
While they do have arguably the best tight end in football in George Kittle, Shanahan should jump at the chance to acquire New York Giants tight end Evan Engram, who could be kicked out of town as Dave Gettleman tries to find more picks to improve a poor 53-man roster. Rumor has it that Engram IS on San Fran's radar.
Engram isn't going to come cheap, however. The 49ers might not have picks in the second, third, or fourth round, so they will likely need to give up a third-round pick in 2021 and a fifth-round pick either this year or next to poach Engram, still on a rookie contract, from the Giants.
While Engram will often end up on the injury report if he sneezes too hard, he is a truly unique player, as he can line up at wide receiver and in-line as a tight end. His speed, hands, and playmaking ability with the ball in his hands would be ideal for a receiver in Shanahan's scheme.
Engram's injury history and blocking struggles will make him a hard sell for some in the 49ers organization, but the potential of Engram being used as a slot mismatch in a Shanahan offense is too good for San Francisco to pass up.
