This 49ers-Packers Trade for Jamaal Williams Could Help Bolster San Fran's Backfield for 2020 and Beyond

Green Bay Packers running back Jamaal Williams better not have too many hard feelings for the San Francisco 49ers, as there is a legit chance that Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch end up trading for him.

The 49ers appear to be set at running back with Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman, but Shanahan could look to add some pieces to his backfield rotation, after trading Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a fifth-round selection in the 2020 draft (used to pick West Virginia tackle Colton McKivitz).

San Francisco wouldn't have to give up much to get Williams, as a sixth-round pick might be enough to pry the former BYU star away, given his impending free agency.

Williams has never topped 556 yards rushing in a season, but his versatility stands out, as he has at least 675 yards from scrimmage in each of his first three seasons despite limited playing time. After finding the end zone six times last year, he could be a quality change of pace back for Shanahan.

Williams might not have much time left in Green Bay, as the emergence of Aaron Jones and the selection of Boston College sledgehammer AJ Dillon in the second round could be enough to push him out of Wisconsin.

Shanahan is never going to turn down the chance to add versatility on offense, and a player like Williams would make for a fine addition.
