VIDEO: 49ers TE George Kittle Defending Jimmy Garoppolo on ESPN's First Take is Every San Francisco Fan's Dream
By Evan Wolff
Despite leading his San Fransisco 49ers to a dominant regular season, and ending with a Super Bowl appearance, 49ers quarterback faced a lot of criticism from the media on his supposed shortcomings, especially with Tom Brady suddenly available as a free agent. The 49ers eventually stayed with Garoppolo as their starter, and star tight end George Kittle went on ESPN's First Take this morning to defend his San Fransisco teammate, now that their union has been cemented for 2020.
Kittle, of course, makes an excellent point that quarterback mistakes are always hyper-analyzed in the NFL. If the 49ers had held onto their lead in the second half of Super Bowl LIV, this conversation wouldn't even be happening.
However, because the 49ers are so unbelievably loaded with talent, the scapegoat often becomes the quarterback who, predictably, can't make every perfect throw.
Before this segment, I'm sure Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman were expecting something a little more confrontational, giving them opportunities for rebuttals and an excellent source of content for days to come. What they got instead was a perfectly measured response from one of the most outspoken guys in the league, and 49ers fans will only love George Kittle more for actively defending the oft-criticized Jimmy G.
