5 Greatest SEC Championship Games of All Time
By Scott Rogust
College football's regular season has reached its conclusion this past weekend, meaning fans are set for huge conference championship games in a few days. Perhaps the strongest game of this Saturday is the SEC Title Game between the No. 2 LSU Tigers and No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs.
Bragging Rights. Joe Burrow vs. Jake Fromm. A spot in the College Football Playoff hanging in the balance. This game has it all.
With that in mind, let's reminisce about the strong SEC Championship matchups from years past. Here are the five best SEC Title Games in history.
5. 2013: Auburn vs. Missouri
The 2013 SEC Title Game was the epitome of an offensive shootout. No defense was allowed on this night. Both Auburn and Missouri accounted for a total of 1,210 yards of offense. More impressively, Auburn rushed for 545 yards and SEVEN TOUCHDOWNS. Auburn went onto win 59-42 to improve to 12-1 and reach the National Championship Game that year.
4. 1992: Alabama vs. Florida
Of course, the first-ever SEC Championship Game has to be on this list. Not only because it was the inaugural matchup, but it was a great game that came down to the wire. Alabama led 21-7, before Florida surged back to tie things up midway through the fourth quarter. With three minutes remaining, Alabama cornerback Antonio Langham intercepted a Shane Matthews pass and returned it for the game-winning touchdown.
3. 2008: Florida vs. Alabama
This is when the legend of Tim Tebow grew larger. Entering the 2008 SEC Title Game against the undefeated Alabama Crimson Tide, Florida was contained for the majority of the game. Facing a 20-17 deficit in the fourth quarter, Tebow led the Gators on two consecutive touchdown drives, giving them the 31-20 win and handing Alabama their first loss of the year.
2. 2012: Georgia vs. Alabama
This game had ALL of the lead changes. Well, four to be exact. With Georgia holding the lead late, Alabama turned the tides on a huge touchdown reception from Amari Cooper. Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray led the offense all the way down to Alabama's eight-yard line. Murray completed a pass to receiver Chris Conley, but he was tackled in bounds, allowing the clock to run out, giving the Crimson Tide the 32-28 win. Close but no cigar for Georgia.
1. 2018: Alabama vs. Georgia
This game simply had it all. The Bulldogs were out for revenge following their overtime loss in the 2018 CFP Final to the Crimson Tide. Georgia held a huge lead for the majority of the game, even knocking quarterback Tua Tagovailoa out of the game. With viewers counting out Alabama, head coach Nick Saban called upon Jalen Hurts. The former starter led Alabama to a huge come-from-behind 35-28 win and helped the Crimson Tide clinch the No. 1 seed in the CFP.
