5 NFL Head Coaching Candidates Your Team Should Avoid
By Jerry Trotta
Though Black Monday didn't exactly live up to last year's firing extravaganza that saw six head coaches canned, there were no shortage of rumors linking candidates to the few vacancies the NFL currently has to fill.
It's just so difficult to forecast the potential of these candidates given their lack of experience or how things ended during their previous tenure.
With the rumors still flying in, let's highlight a few popular names that your team should avoid signing as HC.
5. 49ers DC Robert Saleh
First and foremost, the track record for defensive-minded HC's that studied under Pete Carroll is anything but promising. Dan Quinn has probably been the most successful, but we all know that the Falcons' offense is what propelled them to a Super Bowl appearance a few years back. Additionally, Saleh's production as a DC is alarmingly dependent on a star-studded roster. He's finally showing results in 2019 with a LOADED San Francisco defense. Any competent DC could produce a top-three defense with the 49ers' roster. Teams looking to hire the 40-year-old should be wary.
4. Bills OC Brian Daboll
We were pretty shook when it was reported that the Browns were planning on bringing in Daboll for an interview. Then again, we're talking about the Browns, so maybe it wasn't all that surprising. The bottom line here, however, is that there's nothing wrong with admitting that some assistants/coordinators are just better served in those positions. Daboll had success with Alabama, the Patriots, and in Buffalo since taking over as OC, but something tell us he could be in over his head as an NFL head coach.
3. Baylor HC Matt Rhule
We understand that Rhule had success at both Temple and Baylor, and he deserves massive credit for turning around a Bears program that was in utter shambles when he took over in 2017. However, the transition to the NFL is never a smooth one. Just ask Kliff Kingsbury, who made that jump with the Cardinals this season and had a 5-10-1 record to show for it.
2. Mike McCarthy
Did we all just forget that McCarthy was one of the more conservative coaches in the league during his stint with with the Packers? He was also maddeningly stubborn in refusing to upgrade or evolve his offense, a flaw that ultimately led to his falling out with Aaron Rodgers and dismissal as HC. McCarthy is anything but win-now organizations should be searching for this offseason.
1. Patriots OC Josh McDaniels
Does McDaniels deserve another shot at a head coaching gig? Probably. Should a team take a chance on him? Absolutely not. When it came out that the Browns requested the Patriots' permission to interview McDaniels, we were flabbergasted. Remember when he completely bailed on the Colts and ran back to Bill Belichick after agreeing to become their HC? McDaniels will always have Foxborugh as a fallback plan. Just look at what happened after he flamed out in Denver as a head coach. That alone should make him unapproachable this offseason.
