5 Teams That Should Trade for Olli Maatta
By Adam Godfrey
The Pittsburgh Penguins are a team that should be very active this offseason, as they're at risk of losing a lot of talent. Big names are set to hit the open market including Phil Kessel and possibly Evgeni Malkin. Along with them, another name that will be on the table in trade talks is Olli Maatta. There are a handful of potential suitors who should make a run at him as we approach a pivotal offseason.
5. New York Islanders
The New York Islanders had a surprisingly strong season this year, making it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after sweeping the Penguins. Although a trade between these two rivals is unlikely, Maatta would help an already solid defensive group, so he could help the Islanders return to the playoffs next season, and possibly help them advance further than this year.
4. Nashville Predators
The Nashville Predators are one of many teams who feel as if they are right in line with the best teams in the league, but haven't completed a finished product. After a first-round exit in this years playoffs, the Predators began throwing some names around in trade talks. If these rumors are true, and they are looking to unload PK Subban, and Pittsburgh could be a potential suitor. If that's the case, Nashville should ensure Maatta is part of any trade they make with the Pens.
3. Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens had a great regular season this past year, yet just missed the playoffs in the last few games of their season. The addition of a top four defenseman would only help Montreal, especially if they get hit with the injury bug once again. The Canadiens would be a good fit for Maatta, and the young Finnish star could help take this team to the postseason by offering more defensive prowess.
2. Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers always seem to be looking for a way to tighten up their defense. The addition of the 24-year-old left-handed defenseman would go a long way for this team. Maatta could be inserted as a key defenseman in Edmonton if he were to find his way there. Maatta, along with other additions the Oilers hope to make this offseason, could be what the team needs to make the playoffs next season for what would be just the second time in the last 13 seasons.
1. Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks look as if they are heading in the right direction, with a plethora of young offensive talent. They also have solid defensemen on the roster, but the addition of Maatta could help make the Canucks a competitive team sooner than expected. He'd provide excellent depth and could help transform this team back into contenders before long.
