5 Wildest Player Ratings in MLB The Show 20
By Brendan Balsamo
The release of a new sports video game always brings debate. There has never been a game where everyone has been completely okay with all of the player ratings, with each year providing a fresh wave of both overrated and underrated players.
MLB the Show 20, which went on sale Friday, has no shortage of debatable player ratings, but here are five of the most questionable ones the game has to offer.
5. Hyun-Jin Ryu
According to MLB the Show, the Toronto Blue Jays signed an 81 overall pitcher to a four-year, $80 million contract this offseason. That rating is just wrong. Ryu pitched to an MLB leading 2.32 ERA in 2019 and, despite a smaller sample size, had a 1.97 ERA in 82.1 innings in 2018. He's starting to find some consistency in his game and should, at the least, be an 85+ player.
4. Zack Britton
Yes, it's true. Zack Britton is getting older, as he is entering his age-32 season. However, in 66 games in 2019 for the Yankees, Britton held an incredible 1.91 ERA. He has been a top reliever in the game since his days on the Baltimore Orioles, and had his lowest ERA since 2016 this past season. The fact that he is only a 72 overall is absolutely absurd, especially considering Oliver Perez received a rating of 74.
3. Josh Donaldson
Josh Donaldson is apparently an 82 overall player according to MLB the Show. If that's correct, then why did he sign a four-year deal with the studded Minnesota Twins for a guaranteed $92 million? He even hit 37 home runs and accumulated a 6.0 WAR in 2019. If that's not at least an 85 player rating, I don't know what is.
2. Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres of the New York Yankees is quickly establishing himself as one of the top middle infielders in the MLB, and he's only entering his age-23 season. Despite making the All-Star team, crushing 38 homers and recording a .871 OPS in 2019, Torres somehow sits at just an 82 overall to start the year, a shockingly low rating.
1. Juan Soto
In his first two seasons, Juan Soto is hitting a combined .282 and has 180 career RBI. In 2019 alone he had 110 RBI and got his first World Series ring with the Washington Nationals. In only 274 games, he already has a 7.4 career WAR and is one of the most athletic, dynamic, and entertaining players in the game. In what world does that constitute an 83 overall rating?
