5 Worst Performances By Quarterbacks in Super Bowl History
Super Bowls are a time for quarterbacks to turn into legends. Yet they can also turn into sheep, and both Patrick Mahomes and Jimmy Garoppolo are trying to avoid the latter this Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. Both will try to avoid joining the following list of quarterbacks who make up the worst Super Bowl performances in NFL history
5. Jared Goff, Super Bowl LIII
The Los Angeles Rams entered Super Bowl LIII as one of the most explosive offenses in recent NFL history. The team proceeded to score three total points as Jared Goff went 19-for-38 for 229 yards with an interception. This came after a regular season when he eclipsed 4,600 yards and had 32 touchdowns. Goff looked lost and like he had never seen an NFL defense before on the game's biggest stage.
4. Joe Theismann, Super Bowl XVIII
The Washington Redskins got blown out in Super Bowl XVIII by the Los Angeles Raiders. The final score was 38-9 on a day when Joe Theismann went 16-for-35 for 243 meaningless yards and two interceptions. This all came after he was named the MVP for a dominant regular season. Unfortunately he failed to show up when it mattered most.
3. John Elway, Super Bowl XXII
John Elway and the Denver Broncos had some bad Super Bowls before finally winning one. One of Elway's worst-ever games came in Super Bowl XXII when he went a terrible 14-for-38 for 257 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. His offense scored 10 points and his giveaways killed momentum as the Washington Redskins scored 42 unanswered points.
2. Kerry Collins, Super Bowl XXXV
Kerry Collins did not give the New York Giants a chance to win in Super Bowl XXXV. All he had to do was out-duel Trent Dilfer and instead he proceeded to throw four interceptions. He finished going 15-for-39 for 112 yards and a passer rating that barely registered on the scale. Collins kept his job for the Giants the following year but his Super Bowl performance, even against a great defense, is one of the worst ever.
1. Rich Gannon, Super Bowl XXXVII
Rich Gannon ran an Oakland Raiders offense in 2002 that was the best in the NFL. Then came the Super Bowl when Gannon threw a whopping five interceptions in a 48-21 blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He did throw two touchdowns, but the five picks doomed any shot the Raiders had to win. That just can't happen on such a big stage and it was the beginning of the end for Gannon.
