6 Super Bowl Commercials That Were Banned Before They Could Air
By Jack Murphy
Every year, millions of people across America get together with friends and family to watch the Super Bowl. While some observe it to see who will be crowned champions of the NFL, others are simply interested in the creative and humorous commercials. While fans get to see a share of interesting advertisements, some of them made for the game never get aired due to their NSFW or just outright disturbing content.
Here are six commercials that never made it on to the Super Bowl broadcast.
6. SodaStream: Scarlett Johansson (2014)
SodaStream's ad featuring the A-lister Scarlett Johansson was not inappropriate like the other commercials on this list. So then why was it banned from the Super Bowl? Well it took a jab at Pepsi who was the sponsor of the halftime show of the 2014 Super Bowl. It's like the advertising team at SodaStream wanted their commercial to get banned.
5. Rolling Rock: Ricochet (2007)
In 2007, Rolling Rock almost nailed it with this one. The commercial was very comical as almost everyone in the commercial got nabbed in the groin with the baseball. They ruined it by how they placed two baseballs along side the beer bottle to resemble... well, you get the gist. Not the best way to finish a commercial meant to be seen by the masses.
4. Powerade Zero: Teeter Totter (2009)
In this advertisement intended to air during Super Bowl 43, Powerade wanted to market their new zero calorie drink by comparing it to Gatorade -- in one of the worst ways possible. Two women are sitting on a teeter totter while wearing bikinis while one is chugging Gatorade and the other is drinking Powerade. The woman who was drinking Gatorade then drops to the ground as her beverage caused her to weigh more. Yikes.
3. JesusHatesObama.com (2011)
Everyone has their political opinions, and everyone's political opinion should be understood and respected. However, airing a commercial advertising a website called "JesusHatesObama" during the Super Bowl is probably not the best idea. FOX had no choice to ban the commercial that was making a mockery of the President of the United States during the most watched event aired on television in the country. Did this really ever stand a chance of making it onto screens during the big game?
2. PETA: Veggie Love (2009)
PETA is known for their support for ethical treatment of animals. It seems they don't see any issues with the over-sexualization of women though. This ad features women who strip down to lingerie for vegetables. Then appearing across the screen it says "Vegetarians Have Better Sex." Not very appropriate to air for millions to see. 2009 was a strange time for attempted Super Bowl advertisements.
1. Durex: Our Protection (2012)
This is a commercial virtually everyone could have gone without seeing, and we're honestly questioning why Durex even thought this would be remotely appropriate to air. While attempting to promote safe sex, Durex effectively created the most horrible commercial of all time, which was undoubtedly (and for obvious reasons) blackballed from airing during the Super Bowl.
