82-Year-Old Man Set to Take Over as Mets Pitching Coach
By Jared Kish
The New York Mets pitching staff this season has been anything but impressive, top to bottom. The Mets rank 28th in the MLB in staff ERA (that was supposed to be their strength!), so a change was needed for the Metropolitans.
After firing their pitching coach Dave Eiland and bullpen coach Chuck Hernandez, the Mets have decided they will hand the pitching coach duties to 82-year-old Phil Regan.
Regan is no stranger to baseball, of course, as he played in the majors himself and was teammates with Sandy Koufax. In fact, it was Koufax who gave Regan his nickname "The Vulture," due to his ability to earn wins in late relief.
Regan spent 12 years in the big leagues, playing for the Tigers, Dodgers, Cubs, and White Sox. Regan was a right-handed pitcher. and has a career record of 96-81.
He's a uniquely advanced figure in baseball history, but is...now really the time to be hiring this man to coach Noah Syndergaard?
The 82-year-old pitching coach is no stranger to coaching, especially in the Mets organization. From 2009 through 2015, Regan was the Port St. Lucie Mets head coach, retiring after the 2015 season. Florida's where most men his age naturally go to retire, of course.
The Mets are sticking with manager Mickey Callaway for now, but they are hoping that the 82-year-old Regan can be their saving grace in the pitching department.
For real.
