Aaron Boone Needs to Make 2 Very Simple Lineup Tweaks for Yankees in Game 4
By Jerry Trotta
The New York Yankees were riding high after Game 1 of the ALCS on Saturday when their offense hung seven runs on Zack Greinke and the Houston Astros bullpen en route to a 7-0 victory at Minute Maid Park.
However, the narrative swiftly changed over the last three days as the Yanks now find themselves down 2-1 after Gerrit Cole's gutsy performance in Game 3 on Tuesday night.
Aaron Boone needs to act fast as the bulk of his lineup -- Gary Sanchez, Gio Urshela, Didi Gregorius, Brett Gardner and Edwin Encarnacion -- have been ice cold at the plate.
Those figures combine for an egregious .116 batting average.
To give the Yanks the best chance at winning in Game 4, Boone simply needs to deploy DJ LeMahieu, Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge -- the club's three hottest hitters -- at the top of his lineup. Additionally, he needs to demote Sanchez, who has recorded one hit in the ALCS, down to the eighth spot.
On Tuesday night, the scorching hot Torres, who batted fifth, was surrounded by the likes of Gardner (third), Encarnacion (fourth), Gregorius (sixth) and Sanchez (seventh). Not only does Gleyber have no runners on base when he steps into the dish, but he has literally zero support behind him.
Maybe have it look something like LeMahieu, Judge, Torres, Hicks, Gregorius, Encarnacion, Urshela, Sanchez, Gardner? Any sort of adjustment would look good right now.
We understand that Boone wants balance in his card, but these are desperate times as the Pinstripes are one more L away from being on the brink of elimination.
Boone needs to act fast, but the changes he needs to make aren't all that complicated. Based on their play, the skipper should've began contemplating how to move switch up his lineup as soon as the Astros made the final out in Game 3.
