Aaron Boone Not Winning AL Manager of the Year is an Absolute Joke
By Scott Rogust
When it comes to the year-end BBWAA Awards, there is always some form of controversy. Of course, the trend continued in 2019, as Rocco Baldelli of the Minnesota Twins won American League Manager of the Year.
While Baldelli did a great job in his debut season as a skipper, no one in the AL overcame more adversity this season than Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees, and he is the rightful winner of the award.
The Yankees won the AL East with absolute ease this year despite being riddled with injuries throughout the entire season.
A total of 30 members of the Yankees roster hit the injured list, which is the most in MLB history. Oh, and those downed players spent a total of 2,433 days on the sidelines this season, which is also a league record.
Virtually any other manager would have faltered and struggled with their stars out for extended periods of time. But not Boone.
The Yankees utilized their farm system to replace the likes of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius, Luis Severino and many more. Deploying a startling lineup consisting of Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, New York still won games, thanks in part to Boone's managing abilities and the incorporated "next man up" mentality.
While congratulations do go out to Baldelli for being named the American League's best manager, the award should have gone to Boone, whose accomplishments this season extend beyond the league standings.
