Aaron Boone's Latest Update on Luis Severino Suggests He Could Be Back With Yankees Next Week
By Thomas Carannante
The New York Yankees are poised to get even stronger during the stretch run just before the postseason.
One of their star players who has missed the entire year is Luis Severino, but he's been on the mend and will be pitching for the Trenton Thunder on Friday in their Double-A playoff series. If that goes well, manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander could make his long-awaited return to the MLB club.
You couldn't ask for better timing. If this indeed turns out to be the case, Sevy will get 3-4 starts this month and shake off enough rust in preparation for the playoffs, where he'll be desperately needed. The Yankees starting rotation has largely been inconsistent and disappointing this season, constantly getting bailed out by the relentless offense.
Given the competition the Yanks will be facing in the playoffs in terms of the starting pitching, they'll need some reliable arms of their own. Luckily James Paxton has risen to the occasion in recent weeks, so the addition of Severino will be that much more valuable if he can return to form.
Now just wait for Dellin Betances, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Gio Urshela to get healthy. It'll be a fully healthy Yankees squad gunning for the World Series.
