Hicks was dealing with elbow discomfort during the second half of the regular season and continued to play as the Yankees advanced in the playoffs, and even hit a clutch three-run homer off Houston Astros' ace Justin Verlander during Game 5 of the ALCS.
After the Yankees were eliminated in Game 6 of the ALCS, Hicks, starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, and first baseman Luke Voit all needed surgery to repair injuries.
Per Brian Cashman: Tanaka had arthroscopic surgery to remove bone spurs in his elbow; Voit surgery to repair core muscle injuries; Hicks will have Tommy John on Oct. 30. 8-10 months rehab.

Both Tanaka and Voit are expected to make full recoveries prior to spring training in February 2020. Hicks, however, will have between 8-10 months of rehab and is anticipated to be back for New York around the halfway point of the 2020 season.
In the meantime, the Yankees will have to address the void in their outfield this offseason.
