Aaron Rodgers is Excited the Packers Hired a Sports Psychologist
By Scott Rogust
The physical well-being of athletes is of the utmost importance in sports, but mental health cannot be ignored. The Green Bay Packers have taken a huge step forward in helping their players deal with the mental side of the game.
On Thursday, the team announced that they hired Dr. Chris Carr as their Director of Performance Psychology and Team Behavioral Health Clinician. Perhaps the biggest supporter of the move was the Packers' most important player: quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Carr had previously worked with the organization as a consultant back in 2018. Prior to his gig with the Packers, Carr worked as a sports and performance psychologist at St. Vincent Sports Performance in Indianapolis back in 2006. Besides consulting the Packers, Carr previously worked for the NBA's Indiana Pacers on a part-time basis.
Rodgers spoke glowingly of Carr this past season, as did cornerback Kevin King, who told the media that he spoke with the psychologist during the team's playoff run.
The Packers now join the Carolina Panthers as the only teams in the NFL to have a full-time sports psychologist on staff. It will only be a matter of time until the remaining 30 organizations follow suit, and they should.
