Absolutely Ridiculous Duke Fan Column Torches ESPN Over Their Treatment of Childish Grayson Allen
By Max Scoli
Memphis Grizzlies guard Grayson Allen was ejected from Thursday's Summer League game against the Boston Celtics after picking up two flagrant fouls, and many Duke fans were not happy about it.
One fan had the courage to speak his mind: Matt Giles.
He wasn't even upset at Allen's dirty play (which was...quite blatant), but rather the reactions of the ESPN commentators who were assigned to the contest.
How could...anyone feel the cricitism was unwarranted? And how could anyone feel that the former Duke player was the victim?
I mean, take a look at this tasty lick from the piece:
When defecating foul takes concerning the latest foul from Duke basketball treasure and current Memphis Grizzlies guard Grayson Allen, ESPN announcers are consistently biased, off-base, and as out of line as unsupervised kindergartners waiting at the water fountain.
ESPN broadcaster Dan Dakich did not hold back on his criticism of Allen, who has a history of trying to stretch the rules in his favor.
"Duke defended him ad nauseam, enabled him. Now it just continues," Dakich said. "Truthfully it's just exhausting. If he were this tough, grind-it-out, fighting guy, you'd say, alright. But he just stays around the perimeter avoids contact and then does stuff like that."
- Dan Dakich
He would continue to mock the former NCAA champion by saying that he thinks, "It's everybody else's fault. It's never poor Grayson's."
Despite the froth-mouthed ravings of this Duke fan-centric column, Dakich does have a point. Allen has made a habit out of hacking and whacking opposing offensive players, followed by his classic gaze of puzzlement as if he had done nothing wrong. However, this was not one of those cases.
Whether or not the contact was hard enough to draw blood was irrelevant; Allen shoved Williams out of turn, was warned, and then smacked him again, for no reason. Allen has to be better, and the commentators don't need to change anything.
