Absurd Jacob deGrom Stat Proves Just How Badly the Mets' Offense Has Failed Him
By Sean Facey
Jacob deGrom is one of the few bright spots on the New York Mets. Every fifth day, he takes the mound and gives the team his all to put them in a position to win. More often than not, though, his teammates still end up letting him down.
The last two years have been particularly brutal for deGrom. The Mets ace has posted an impressive 2.18 ERA across his last 52 starts...and he has only 15 wins to show for it.
No matter how archaic pitcher wins may be as a stat, it's downright outrageous how often his teammates let him down. An ERA that low should be enough to earn the win in at least half of those games, if not more.
Instead, he's earned just 15 measly wins despite being one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. In fact, he's been tagged with more losses, 16, than wins during that stretch!
Couple that with the 21 no-decisions he's had to sit through and you'd almost think that the Mets were actively trying to lose with him on the mound. It's like the offense decides to phone it in when he's starting because they think they won't need that much effort to win. The run support for him is non-existent.
In those 52 starts, deGrom has allowed four or more runs in just four outings. He's been a quality start machine yet the Mets haven't found out how to give him run support on a consistent basis.
It's completely unfair that a pitcher of deGrom's caliber has to go unrewarded for his efforts as often as he does. If he decided to pull a Mickey Callaway and start throwing things around next time he gets a loss, I don't think anyone would blame him.
