VIDEO: Adam Silver Admits NBA Regular Season Could Be Over After Coronavirus Suspension
By Jerry Trotta
Considering the magnitude of the chain reaction that has unfolded in the last 24 hours amid the coronavirus outbreak, this news is hardly surprising. The NBA announced an indefinite suspension on Wednesday night shortly after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the illness. It's not known how long the hiatus will last, and commissioner Adam Silver provided some worrying insight on the future of the season during an appearance on a special edition of TNT's "Inside the NBA" on Thursday.
"Of course it's possible," Silver said. "I just don't know more at this point."
Silver notes that he's conversed with a lot of experts who have theorized that COVID-19 could begin to "peter out" as we begin to transition beyond winter and into warmer temperatures. Though that's an optimistic possibility, it's also a massive hypothetical.
As Silver notes, so many questions will go unanswered as he and the NBA's higher-ups continue to consider all of the information at their disposal. All we know right now is that the Association has adhered to the requests of its owners as Silver also disclosed that the suspension will last at least 30 days.
We'll have more information on this development as Silver and Co. continue to weigh all of their options. In the meantime, it would probably behoove basketball buffs to come to terms with the possibility of being without the NBA for at least a month.
