Adam Wainwright Plans on Coming Back to Cardinals in 2020
By Parker White
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright had a brilliant postseason, which could've been his last in a Redbirds uniform. However, it looks like that...isn't in the cards.
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Wainwright and the Cardinals are working on a new deal for him to return in 2020.
Both sides are eager to work something out, and after the bounce-back 2019 season Wainwright had, it makes sense that the Cardinals would want him to return.
In 31 regular season starts, Wainwright went 14-10 with a 4.19 ERA and had 153 strikeouts over 171.2 innings. The 38-year-old was even better in October, posting a 1.62 ERA over 16.2 innings.
Wainwright has spent his entire 15-year career with the Cardinals, so it's not shocking that the two sides want to work out a deal. However, after a couple brutal years in 2017 and 2018, we wondered if Wainwright had anything left in the tank and if the Cardinals would try and retain him once his contract ended.
Well, he proved this year that he's still a viable big league starter, even if he isn't the staff ace he once was.
