AL and NL Rookie of the Year Finalists Revealed
By Michael Luciano
While these awards may seem like forgone conclusions to some, the AL and NL Rookie of the Year finalists paid homage to the three best rookies in what was a year dominated by standout first-year players.
Mets record-breaker Pete Alonso was one of the three NL finalists, along with Braves righty Mike Soroka and Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.
Alonso clubbed 53 bombs, which broke Aaron Judge's record for home runs in a rookie season. Tatis hit .317 with 22 home runs and 16 steals before a season-ending injury, while Soroka put up a sparkling 2.68 ERA for the Braves.
While 99 percent of preseason predictions had either Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or Bo Bichette as the rookie of the year, neither were deemed a finalist, as Orioles All-Star John Means, Rays infielder Brandon Lowe, and Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez nabbed the three nominations.
Means went 12-11 with a 3.60 ERA, and was one of Baltimore's lone bright spots. Lowe was an All-Star that hit .270 with 17 home runs, while Alvarez, the betting favorite by a mile, hit .313 with 27 home runs and 78 RBIs in just 87 games.
The winners of these awards will be announced on Nov. 11.
