AL MVP Race Power Rankings 2019
By Parker White
There are roughly five weeks left in the 2019 regular season, so it won't be long until major awards are handed out to the most deserving players in their respective leagues.
The top award, and it's not even a debate, is the MVP. So, who is leading the pack right now? Here's a power rankings of the MVP award in the American League.
American League MVP Power Rankings
10. Max Kepler, Minnesota Twins
If Minnesota wants to win the AL Central, they need Max Kepler to continue having a career year. The Twins outfielder has had a coming out party this season, slashing .255/.336/.529 with 33 home runs and 81 RBI. Most of his damage is coming from the lead off spot, which makes his numbers that much more impressive.
9. Xander Bogaerts, Boston Red Sox
If Boston was a better team, Xander Bogaerts would be getting a lot more MVP attention. The Red Sox shortstop is slashing an impressive .309/.384/.562 with 42 doubles, 27 home runs and 94 RBI. Still, his production at the plate hasn't been enough to keep Boston alive in the Wild Card race.
8. Michael Brantley, Houston Astros
One of the best signings of the offseason has been the Astros' acquisition of Michael Brantley. It helps that he's surrounded by fellow All-Stars, but Brantley has been a consistent force all year, slashing .335/.392/.541 with 18 home runs and 74 RBI. When healthy, he's one of the best hitters in the sport.
7. Justin Verlander, Houston Astros
You can debate whether pitchers should even be eligible for the MVP award, but there is precedence for a pitcher who gets wins. Justin Verlander is a winner through and through 2019 campaign can't be ignored, as he ranks second in the AL in ERA (2.81) and tops all of baseball in strikeouts (228), WHIP (0.84), innings pitched (169.2) and opponents batting average (.176).
6. Gleyber Torres, New York Yankees
I know Gleyber Torres' numbers have been inflated by the launching pad that emerges whenever he faces the Baltimore Orioles, but he joins DJ LeMahieu as the consistent offensive forces in New York with a lot of the big names on the sideline. Thus far, Torres is slashing .282/.347/.533 with 29 home runs and 73 RBI. Not too shabby for a middle infielder who identifies as a contact hitter.
5. Carlos Santana, Cleveland Indians
After a rough 2018 campaign in Philadelphia, veteran first baseman Carlos Santana returned to Cleveland and is rediscovering his form, slashing .292/.414/.548 with 29 home runs and 78 RBI. It's been an uphill climb for the Indians all season, but Santana has been the driving force of this team that could end up winning the division, thanks in large part to the season their first baseman has strung together.
4. Alex Bregman, Houston Astros
The Houston Astros have suffered a lot injuries to their position player group, but the constant has been third baseman Alex Bregman, who is slashing .282/.411/.563 with 30 home runs and 83 RBI. Bregman has proven to be one of the best players in the AL, and he's arguably the most clutch player with the game on the line in the sport.
3. DJ LeMahieu, New York Yankees
DJ LeMahieu might not be the most talented player on the New York Yankees, but this team wouldn't have the best record without him. LeMahieu put up good numbers out in Colorado, but he's taken it up another level in pinstripes, leading baseball with a .339 batting average to go along with 21 home runs, 86 RBI and a .930 OPS. He's played like an MVP all season, giving him a shot to at the very least be a finalist.
2. Rafael Devers, Boston Red Sox
Who would've thunk this? I know Rafael Devers was a once-heralded prospect for Boston, but he's become arguably the most feared hitter on this team, as he's slashing .332/.380/.596 with 46 doubles, 27 home runs and a whopping 101 RBI with more than a month left in the season. If the Red Sox were in the playoff fight even more, especially in the division, you might be looking at the favorite to win AL MVP.
1. Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels
Does this shock anyone? Not only is Mike Trout the best player in the game, but he's having the best season of his career. In 118 games thus far, Trout is slashing .298/.444/.666 with 41 home runs and 96 RBI. He's on pace to have career high's in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and OPS. His Angels may not make the postseason, but they are more competitive this year and Trout is doing all he can to help this team get above .500.
