The concept of "qualified immunity," which states that government officials can't be accused of violating a plaintiff's rights if they were acting in their official capacity, has once again been thrust into the spotlight after Derek Chauvin's killing of George Floyd. A discussion of police accountability on a macro scale has also emerged recently.

The Players Coalition, a compilation of players, coaches, and owners fighting for social justice across America, gathered over 1,100 signatures in favor of the Amash-Pressley bill this week, which would go some way towards ending qualified immunity.

Among the hundreds of signatures was that of Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman.

While football stars like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Joe Burrow were among the dozens of NFL headliners that signed this petition, a good chunk of current and former MLB stars put their names behind this extremely worthwhile cause, too.

Besides Bregman, stars like Giancarlo Stanton, Andrew McCutchen, and Jack Flaherty were among those demanding accountability for police brutality. Retired players like Prince Fielder and CC Sabathia also threw their names and motivation behind this movement.

The first step towards causing systemic change that holds police accountable is a national, unified movement that features the backing of some of the most visible names in the country. Kudos to Bregman and the hundreds of athletes willing to put their neck on the line by supporting this.
