Even as the Boston Red Sox are steadying themselves, they are lacking some thunder in the middle of their lineup after they placed Mitch Moreland on the IL. While the slugging first baseman with a swing tailor-made for Fenway getting hurt made every Red Sox fan's heart stop, it sounds like he'll be back sooner rather than later.
Manager Alex Cora says Moreland will be back before their matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
Even with an unsightly .228 batting average, Moreland leads the team in home runs with 13. A 2018 All-Star, Moreland has been struggling with back and knee pain after taking a liner off of his right knee against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In just one season, Moreland went from Texas Rangers castoff to middle of the order stalwart for a championship team. the climb back to the playoffs is in full swing for Boston, who need his left-handed power if they want to do anything late in the season.
