Alex Gordon and Royals Nearing Agreement on New Deal
Alex Gordon has been a member of the Kansas City Royals since the 2007 season. During that span he has made three All-Star Games, won seven Gold Gloves, and was an integral part of the 2015 World Series champion team.
The Royals are going through a rebuild, but are reportedly set to retain Gordon for his 14th season in town. Mark Feinsand reports that the two sides are closing in on a new deal to keep Gordon in KC for the 2020 campaign.
This move is a no-brainer for the Royals if Gordon made it clear he wants to stay. The team has one of the lowest payrolls in baseball and can even overpay Gordon just to have his presence around.
Last year Gordon slashed .266/.345/.396 with 13 home runs and 76 RBI. He'll be 36 next season, but he's proven he's still got enough in the tank for at least one more go around. And considering he's known no other home than Kansas City, what better place to suit up for Year 14?
Gordon's $23 million team option was declined earlier in the offseason, but it was never truly expected the veteran would end up leaving town. Now, the Royals will retain the fan favorite at a more reasonable price.
The Royals have failed to reach 60 wins either of the past two seasons. The team is likely hoping Gordon can provide some stability and make it clear the goal isn't to do a total tank.
