Alex Reyes Lands on 7-Day IL With Yet Another Injury Setback

Another frustrating development for St. Louis Cardinals fans.

On Tuesday, Cards pitcher Alex Reyes was placed on the seven-day Injured List at Triple-A Memphis. The oft-injured Reyes had recently exited a start with Memphis on Sunday due to right pectoral discomfort.

It's just another tough blow for the Cardinals, as they're already without Jordan Hicks, who tore his UCL on Monday. Reyes, in theory, could've continued working his way back as an internal bullpen option.

Reyes has had a very disappointing season, posting a 15.00 ERA in three innings of work before fracturing his pinkie. It's not looking much better for him in Triple-A, as he's posted a 7.39 ERA in 28 innings there in 2019. He's clearly dug himself into a hole, and now it could be a long time before he gets another shot at the majors.

St. Louis will absolutely have its pitching depth tested now, as they're without a closer and down a starter in the minors. They had the chance to sign players like Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel, but Cards president John Mozeliak whiffed at the possibility, and decided to stand pat with the pitching core they have now. Now St. Louis will have to scramble to attempt to trade for a closer, and possibly even a starter, before the trade deadline.

Hindsight truly is 20/20. Just ask Mr. Mozeliak.
