VIDEO: Remembering When A-Rod Slapped Bronson Arroyo's Glove Like a Total Weirdo in 2004 ALCS
By Scott Rogust
Whenever someone brings up the most heated rivalries in professional sports, the never-ending feud between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is never far from their lips. Make no mistake about it, these two teams and fan bases hated each other with a level of venom and vitriol that transcends generations. Perhaps the peak of the rivalry hit in the early-mid 2000's, with the 2004 ALCS standing alone in the annals of history. New York initially had a 3-0 series lead, but the Red Sox suddenly became an unstoppable locomotive with all the momentum in the world. And Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez tried to halt that Red Sox rally in Game 6 by... slapping the ball out of pitcher Bronson Arroyo's glove?
In what came to be kown as the Curt Schilling "Bloody Sock Game," A-Rod knew he had to drive in Derek Jeter at all costs, so he smacked at Arroyo's glove in a bizarre attempt to avoid a tag-out. It was a creative bit of execution, but the umpiring crew was having none of it. Naturally, Rodriguez was called out and Jeter had to return to his base.
The score would remain the same, and the Red Sox won 4-2. They turned around and routed the Yankees 10-3 in Game 7 to reach the World Series, which they would win in a four game sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Arroyo and Rodriguez had tremendous beef in 2004, but the Red Sox pitcher got the last laugh: a World Series ring.
