Alvin Kamara Tweets Perfect Response to NASCAR Banning Confederate Flag at Races
By Tyler Kemp
In the world of American sports, NASCAR has been infamous for its lack of diversity and inclusion within its organization relative to others. In response to the protests that have been taking place throughout America in response to the killing of George Floyd, racer Bubba Wallace is using a paint design in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement, which is a great first step on raising awareness on race in the sport.
On a micro scale, Wallace set the bar for what the standard should be surrounding race in NASCAR. As for the macro, the auto racing promotion decided to make a statement about one of the most enduring racist symbols in American history -- and once New Orleans Saints star Alvin Kamara saw NASCAR's statement on Twitter about banning the Confederate battle flag at races, he was quick to ask the question a whole lot of Americans are surely thinking.
Well said.
Kamara has been involved on social media for the past couple of weeks discussing the issue of racial injustice in the United States. Following his calling-out of teammates Drew Brees for his comments about national anthem protests in the NFL to inquiring about the next NASCAR event, Kamara is making sure that both people and companies alike stick to their word and do what's right.
Another question that has been raised is how exactly NASCAR’s statement will be put into action if a fan were to bring a confederate flag to a track.
In the meantime, Kamara is doing the right thing; whether or not he watches a race to notice if NASCAR holds up on their commitment is a different story. If he decides to do so, the hope is that all these words translate into action.
