Andrew Berry Signing LB Clay Matthews Would Be Great Next Step in Masterful Browns Offseason
By Karl Rasmussen
The Cleveland Browns lost a significant amount of talent at the linebacker position in the offseason, seeing the likes of Joe Schobert and Christian Kirksey leave town. While they managed to sign ex-Packers LB BJ Goodson, there's still work to be done at the position.
One player Andrew Berry should be thinking about trying to add is veteran linebacker Clay Matthews, following his release from the Los Angeles Rams.
As it stands, the Browns would enter the 2020 campaign with a linebackers group consisting of Mack Wilson, Goodson, Sione Takitaki and Tae Davis, and the latter two played limited roles in 2019.
With the lack of experience at the position, signing someone like Matthews, who has been in the league since 2009, would be a smart move for Berry and Co. While he's no longer the Pro Bowl caliber talent he was in his prime, Matthews still managed to record eight sacks in 13 games in 2019, along with 37 tackles and a pair of forced fumbles.
The fit would likely be of interest to Matthews, too, whose father spent 16 seasons of his decorated NFL career as a forcible outside linebacker in Cleveland.
The Browns have talent at linebacker, but the overall unit shouldn't inspire much confidence from the fan base. Acquiring Matthews on the open market would give the team much-needed depth, while also complimenting the hot start Berry got off to in his first free agency at the helm.
