Andy Reid Still Sucks With Time Management as Evidenced in Chiefs Loss to Packers
By Andy Loughmiller
Andy Reid is regarded as one of the best offensive minds in football. That said, the Kansas City Chiefs head coach has one glaring weakness that has plagued him throughout his career: not knowing how to manage the clock.
Reid once again ran into this issue in the team's Week 8 loss to the Packers on Sunday Night Football. With just over five minutes left in regulation and facing a 4th and 3 from their own 40-yard line, Reid opted to punt rather than attempt to pick up the first down.
His decision to punt ultimately proved to be the wrong one. The Packers were able to pick up three first downs and run out the clock. The Chiefs never even sniffed the possibility of getting the ball back.
The fact that Green Bay was able to run out the clock shouldn't surprise anyone who watched the game. Kansas City's suspect defense has struggled all year against the run, and Packers running back Aaron Jones was having a career day.
They also have that Aaron Rodgers guy, who is as good as any quarterback in late-game scenarios. Giving the ball back to the hottest offense in the NFL was a bonehead call on Reid's part.
Kansas City has now lost three straight at home, and people are left wondering if things would be different had Reid decided to go for it on a pivotal fourth and short with all the weapons he has on offense.
Reid's poor time management strategies have cost him numerous games during his career as an NFL head coach. It's a shame that it prevented his team from having a chance to win vs. the Packers, because Reid had schemed up a phenomenal game plan for backup quarterback Matt Moore.
