Angels Announce New Coaching Staff for 2020 Under Joe Maddon
By Scott Rogust
The Los Angeles Angels are looking to turn their bad luck around, and are hoping that Joe Maddon can help them accomplish that goal. After walking away from the Chicago Cubs, Maddon signed a three-year contract with the Angels, who ousted Brad Ausmus after just one season.
On Wednesday, Maddon officially revealed his coaching staff for the upcoming 2020 season, and there are some names that certainly stick out.
Despite the addition of Maddon, some coaches remain from last year's staff. Those include hitting coach Jeremy Reed, first base coach Jesus Feliciano, bullpen coach Andrew Bailey, and catching coach Jose Molina.
New additions include former New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway as pitching coach, Brian Butterfield as third base coach, and John Mallee as assistant hitting coach.
What immediately stands out is that the Angels have three different hitting coaches, all carrying different titles. Reed remains in his place as the hitting coach, while John Mallee comes aboard as the assistant hitting coach. Paul Sorrento is employed under the title of "hitting instructor," so it looks as if the Halos are putting some emphasis on batting in 2020.
Mike Gallego, who served as third base coach under Ausmus last season, will serve as Maddon's bench coach.
Now that the coaching staff is officially set, the Angels will set their focus on free agency. With plenty of money to spend, expect the Angels to make a splash, and having Joe Maddon's presence certainly helps.
