Anthony Davis Has Given Up a Serious Ton of Money Since Hiring Rich Paul
By Scott Rogust
Despite the New Orleans Pelicans winning the literal lottery by earning the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft, Anthony Davis still wanted out of New Orleans. He made it be known that he wanted to join the Los Angeles Lakers to pair up with LeBron James, who -- surprise! -- shares the same agent in Klutch Sports' Rich Paul.
And in order to don the purple and gold, Paul and his client missed out on a historic payday in the Big Easy.
Davis effectively rejected what would have been a super-max contract extension from the Pelicans by leaving, and voluntarily waived his $4 million trade kicker Thursday in order to free up additional Laker cap space. Money isn't everything, but that's a huge pile of dough to leave on the table.
Talk about serious sacrifices being made.
Yet, Davis has let it be known every since the midway point of this past season that he wanted no part of New Orleans. The Lakers made numerous attempts to bring the big man to Hollywood, and after some tampering fines and failed trade negotiations, the deal is now agreed, and Davis' wish will officially come true on July 6.
As a result of waiving his trade kicker, James rewarded Davis with his No. 23 jersey, a number he's donned since his collegiate days with the Kentucky Wildcats.
But hey, Davis will have the chance to earn a lucrative contract in the summer of 2020 if he's to waive his player option with the Lakers and re-enter free agency. As for now, sacrifices had to be made in order to fulfill his desire of playing in La La Land.
