Anthony Rendon Calls Out Nationals Fans for Attendance After Clinching Game
By Michael Luciano
The mood around Washington was generally upbeat after the Nationals officially clinched a playoff spot on Tuesday, but MVP candidate Anthony Rendon couldn't help but focus on the droves of empty seats surrounding his celebration.
Just over 22,000 fans showed up for the nightcap of a doubleheader in which Washington clinched, and Rendon took the fans to task over the lack of support almost immediately.
Er...hate to be cynical, but not great vibes heading into free agency?
While attendance has been down all over baseball, Washington has seen a pretty steep decline after Bryce Harper left for the Phillies. Washington is down from 31,000 fans to just around 27,800, good for 16th in the league. It will be the first time since 2012 that Washington didn't average 30,000 fans per game.
While Rendon might have a point here, maybe don't be a wet blanket right after your team clinched, especially considering they weren't expected to be here at all?
Nationals fans can either respond to Rendon's challenge and pack the house for the playoffs, or continue their general indifference. No pressure, but the response and ensuing run could impact his next deal.
