Aroldis Chapman and Josh Hader Named MLB's Relievers of the Year
By Chris Pyo
With the 2019 MLB season coming to an end soon, awards are now being announced by the league, and this one is likely to spark some healthy debate.
Aroldis Chapman of the New York Yankees and Josh Hader of the Milwaukee Brewers have officially been respectively named the AL and NL Relievers of the Year.
Chapman posted 37 saves to go along with a 2.21 ERA, 85 strikeouts and 13.4 strikeouts per inning, while Hader had 37 saves as well to go along with 2.62 ERA, 138 and a stellar 16.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
However, they had a lot of legitimate competition for the award, as neither player led their respective league in saves, ERA or Wins Above Replacement among relievers, which led to many fans questioning the MLB's decision to name Chapman and Hader as the winners.
Yes, San Diego's Kirby Yates is going to be mad about this.
There's also the fact that both Chapman and Hader were responsible for their team's exits from the playoffs, with Chapman giving up a walk-off home run to Jose Altuve in Game 6 of the ALCS that sent the Astros to the World Series, while Hader imploded in the NL Wild Card game, giving up three runs against the Washington Nationals in a 4-3 loss. It's intended to be a regular season award, but still, people!
I guess the MLB just prefers lanky lefties who can throw the ball 100+ MPH.
