Aroldis Chapman Emphatically Combats Rumors He's Opting Out of Yankees Deal With Latest Tweet
With speculation getting heavy regarding Aroldis Chapman's impending player option, the Yankees closer shut down the rumors as convincingly as he could in the middle of the season.
Chapman spoke with reporters and denied the claims that he's looking to opt out of his contract. Further, his tweet suggests he's happy being a Yankee and doesn't expect to test the market, but Kyrie Irving said the same thing about Boston before he bolted for Brooklyn.
Chapman has consistently been one of the top closers in the game, but his velocity has decreased each season and he could hit a wall sooner rather than later. Luckily, he's honed his slider to help him transition from a fastball reliant closer to one who can keep hitters off balance.
The Yankees closer was an All-Star this year, and could believe he's worth more on the open market. Regardless, with two years and $30 million remaining on his contract, and with the recent struggles of top relievers to get paid on the open market, it would benefit Chapman to play out the remaining two years of his deal.
